In the Bag: Shari 2010!

Friday, October 15th, 2010

We took an unintended hiatus from In the Bag. (Ummm…It was a busy summer?) But who better to start us back up than our favorite vegan social worker?! Shari 2010, as we like to call her, emerged, phoenix-like, this summer from grad school, domesticity and a lifestyle sorely lacking in lemongrass infused vodka and model behaviors. Even though she can level me to the ground with one sharp shove, we wouldn’t have her any other way.

Bag: Matt and Nat
In her bag: Marc sunglasses, The Social Network movie stub, Octopus Car Wash coupon, Emergen-Cs, Rosebud Salve lip gloss, kombucha bottle cap, i-phone, alexander wang condoms (gifted from the editor) and Matt and Nat wallet (she doesn’t eff around with leather).
Favorite place on earth: Favorite place she’s been to is Coffee Bay, South Africa. Favorite place she’s yet to visit is Tsavo National Park in Kenya.
Favorite place to shop: Atticus, shopbop.com and Century House for Scandinavian home goods.
Favorite designers: Matt and Nat for Handbags, TOMS for shoes, J. Brand for denim, Monrow for basics, Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs and Rag and Bone for everything else.
Song currently stuck on repeat: The entire new Black Keys album and anything Neil Young.
Can’t live without: Vegan cupcakes from Daisy Café & Cupcakery

In the Bag: Kristin

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

The latest edition of In the Bag features Atticus proprietor Kristin Wild. Get a peek inside one of Kristin’s old standby bags, as well as the bag she’s been coveting.

Currently Carrying: Ashley Watson Plover Bag

Where she carries it: It comes with me to all my regular stops including Bradbury’s Coffee, Co Leigh Co. Salon for my nails, Atticus (of course) and then Natt Spil and Maduro for evening cocktails.

In the bag: Ashley Watson wallet, Ray-Ban aviators (a bday gift from my sister!), more aviators, business cards in a Marc by Marc case, notebook, another notebook, my blue sword lucky charm from my grandpa, Fresh deoderant, gum, Malin+Goetz Lip Moisturizer, Bond No. 9 Scent of Peace, Nars cover up stick, a pen, keys, camera in Temperley case. (If you’re concerned that my Blackberry is mysteriously missing from the list, it’s because it’s rarely in my bag and usually glued to the palm of my hand!)

When she got it: I purchased my Plover toward the end of 2008, and I’ve been carrying it nearly every day since. I’m a firm believer that a good leather bag looks better with age!

Next Purchase: Billykirk Medium Carryall

Where she’ll carry it: I’ve decided that I must have this for my next jet-set trip to NYC. When I’m only there for 36 hours, I have to be able to carry my belongings everywhere I go. I’ll be squeezing in ten showroom appointments (some with new designers…stay tuned!), dropping by Joseph Leonard for cocktails and dinner, popping into Topshop and grabbing breakfast at Pastis.

In the bag: This bag is perfect because I’ll be able to carry it all day, and it’s large enough to pack in loads of paperwork, my camera, Brit Vogue for the flight, a change of clothes (probably T by Alexander Wang, my favorite travel tees), my toothbrush, some refreshing Kai lotion, a giant bottle of water and hopefully that new Field Jacket by Filippa K (a purchase easily justified by the precarious New York weather)!

In The Bag: Alison

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Administrative authority by day and graphic design guru by night, Alison Monday also knows her way around a kitchen, a sewing machine and the blogosphere. One would assume such as creative chameleon would carry a bag jam packed with remnants of her many projects. Instead, being the super cool girl she is, she carries only the necessities. And some rock candy.

Bag?

Ashley Watson

What’s in your bag?

iPhone, 2 pairs of sunglasses, business cards, keys, wallet, iPod, toiletry bag that lookslike a cassette player, a blue reusable shopping bag and rock candy. Read more

In the Bag: Michelle

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Possibly an In the Bag first, Michelle Goldstein’s organized to perfection bag reveals only the bare necessities. That is, if you consider Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Chanel basic essentials. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t? As Business and Affiliate Manager for shopbop.com, it’s no surprise she has impeccable taste, but her Martha Stewart like talent makes whipping together a dinner party, baby shower, farewell send-off or just plain old happy Tuesday soiree look easy. Always the gracious host, her calm under pressure is clearly no act.

Bag?
Rebecca Minkoff

What’s in your bag?
Sunglasses (currently wearing Gucci), fingerless gloves from Forever 21, hat from a store in Park City, Utah, Extra sugar free gum, Chanel bronzer & lip gloss, YSL magic stick (known as touché éclat – radiant touch).

When and where was it purchased?
shopbop.com, 6 months ago

When do you carry it?
Day and evening. It’s a cross body bag – good for shopping so I don’t need to carry anything and I can focus all my arm strength on the mission at hand and good for evening so I can easily grab drinks at the bar for myself and friends without worrying about my handbag.

Favorite spots in Madison to take it?
The usual watering holes…Natt Spil and Maduro or out for a day of shopping.

Favorite places to shop in Madison?
Atticus, bop, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21

Where would you never take it?
A farm

Farthest the bag has traveled with you?
I wish I could say somewhere exotic or far away, but since this is a relatively new bag and I haven’t gone on a “real” vacation since owning it, the bag has been to Chicago, NY, Philly and Park City

What do you wish you’d find in it?
A wad of cash

How many other bags are currently in your rotation?
I have 2 younger sisters so whenever I get a new bag I typically pass an old bag down to them, so I don’t have too many bags in rotation. But currently I’m using a Marc by Marc Jacobs messenger bag (really into cross body bags lately since they are so easy to use), Halston Heritage Night Bag (another cross body- this one is good for evening) and a Gucci Bamboo Bag – great for more formal events. I got it when I was 21 studying abroad in Italy and plan to have it forever.

What’s your dream bag?
A Chanel Handbag. Unfortunately I have really expensive taste so I may be eying this forever (unless my husband, hint hint, decides to get it for me one day). I really want either the classic large flap or the classic flap bag with black leather and gold hardware. I wish I wasn’t so materialistic or label driven, but alas, I am who I am.

What’s the one piece of clothing you can’t live without?
Lululemon pants. They’re great for working out or just bumming around.

In the Bag: Shayna

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Although she could easily be mistaken for an Upper East Side lady of leisure, Shayna Miller is Madison to the core. As Style Editor of Madison Magazine, she’s an authority on all things retail, dishing about eclectic offerings and diverse shopping venues that make up this fair isthmus. An advocate of locally owned independents and champion of sartorial individualism, her voice is every bit as unique as her editorials.

Bag?
Aldo

What’s in your bag?
Kleenex, phone, reporter’s notebook, digital camera, pouch full of lipglosses, giraffe-print pouch full of other essentials (Band-Aids, Bath & Body Works sanitizing hand gel, eye drops, etc) wallet, sunglasses, hand lotion, purse clip, iPod Shuffle, receipts (um, I shop a lot), coupons (I shop a lot), snack bar, business cards, gum, Listerine pocketpack strips and a mac and cheese recipe from the Old Fashioned (run last year in Madison Magazine, no less) that I’m dying to make. I’m actually quite organized and don’t like to carry around a lot of unnecessary things!

Where and when was it purchased?
Aldo in October

How much does it weigh?

No idea, maybe around 7 pounds? Ugh, that’s a lot. And to think I could fit even more in that bag…

Most & Least Expensive item in the bag?
The credit card can BUY the most stuff, but probably the digital camera. The least expensive is the 99 cent Suave hand lotion.

Any items not yours?
I have a greeting card I’m giving someone that I’m holding on to! I also have business cards from contacts that were given to me at various events.

Biggest thing ever in your bag?
I have this creepy cat umbrella I got at a rummage sale for $1. It even has this weird wooden handle in the shape of a cat face. So, I’ve stuffed it in the bag before.

When do you carry it?
Pretty much all of the time–though I’ll sometimes switch it up with a smaller clutch for night, like my favorite magenta one I bought from Atticus! I don’t like to lug around a large bag at night. It’s all about matching the outfit at that point.

Favorite spots in Madison to take it?
Shopping, out to dinner, the movies, the Comedy Club, anywhere I’ll be hanging out with friends.

Favorite places to shop for a bag in Madison?

Anywhere that’s locally owned—although mine is from Aldo—I couldn’t let it go once I spotted it; I had to have it because of the color! Locally, dependable handbag shops include: Patricia Shoppe, Dazzle, The Purple Goose, bop and Atticus.

Where would you never take it?
Sporting events like a UW football game or Brewer game, it’s too bulky and gets in the way—I guess it being seven pounds doesn’t help!

Oddest thing ever in the bag?
I don’t think this is odd but the people who haven’t seen it do: the purse clip I have unfolds and attaches to the edge of a table so you can hang your bag there! It’s fantastic—I highly recommend it. Another wacky thing: a photo on my camera of myself and Jamie Foxx. I met him this summer at his concert—I have a friend who knows him!

Farthest the bag has traveled with you?
Minneapolis, Minn., or Hayward, Wis.—that’s waaaaay up north (five hours)—I haven’t been on any trips since purchasing this bag since I just got it in October.

What do you wish you’d find in it?

Free money. A vacation gift certificate. Or, a gift certificate to any of the fine local retailers I write about all of the time! So fun.

How many other bags are currently in your rotation?

For work I have a brown patent shoulder bag by Loeffler Randall for Target. I love it. For nighttime I’ll carry a clutch. I have many iterations: snakeskin, a magenta one from Atticus, gold pyramid-studded, silver, black patent with a bow, Anya Hindmarch for Target nude and gold, a Coach wristlet, brown and red quilted patent, and I just bought a teal satin ruched one that goes perfectly with a teal necklace I own.

What’s your dream bag or the one you’re eyeing next?

I was reading InStyle the other night and spotted an Urban Expressions studded gray shoulder bag that I LOVE (it comes in turquoise too…beautiful). If money were no object I covet Marc Jacobs royal blue studded “Stam” handbag or any number of handbags from shopbop.com.

What’s the one piece of clothing you can’t live without?
You’re asking the wrong person: everything I have in my wardrobe has a purpose…but, I guess I’ll say for winter my skinny jeans because they go with everything including flats, heels and boots and for summer cute, floaty sundresses are my thing. They’re low maintenance. For accessories I can’t live without gold jewelry, including my gold boyfriend watch and gold hoops that I wear every day.

In the Bag: Nicole

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Overflowing with a veritable menagerie of glosses, polishes and powders galore, you’d expect nothing less from the handbag of Co Leigh Co salon owner, Nicole Moser. Everyone should be so lucky to have a Nicole in their life, magically transforming the hair and makeup of her friends with a few expert strokes. I’ve witnessed her ability to style not one but 5 girls, not to mention herself, before heading out for a night of debauchery. And although she may scold me for fussing with her beautiful creations after the fact, it’s only because she really does know better!

In the Bag: Joanna

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Don’t be fooled by the amount of makeup in Joanna Burish’s bag—she doesn’t need any of it. As an EMBA student and Director of Finance and Development for Welton Enterprises, Inc., her schedule is hectic, but she pulls off an effortlessly eclectic look. Whether it’s rocking leopard print leggings at the office or leather and fur for impromptu dance parties at Maduro, her ethereal, hopelessly positive spirit captivates everyone around her.

White linen and fine dining minus pretension, coupled with the inviting wood finishing and luminous glow, she expertly oversees an institution unlike any other.
